Wednesday, February 20th, 2008This past weekend I decided to purchase a new laptop for BargainBomb related activities. I wanted the instant gratification of walking into a store and purchasing a laptop that fit my needs, taking it back to the office and using it. Shopping in physical retail stores was a nightmare. Every single store had a limited stock of laptops. Some only carried AMD processors, some only Intel. There was no way to get a full selection in one place and make a wise purchasing decision based on all of the possible laptops that are manufactured.
Beyond the issue of selection their was the issue of staff. The staff in the retail stores I shopped at were pushy, brash and not knowledgeable. It was extremely hard to decide if their advice was based on my best interest or on their best interest (commission). At one point I found a laptop connected to the internet and went to Amazon reviews to see some opinions because I was getting so many mixed messages from sales staff.
I did end up buying a laptop (HP DV2000 Special Edition) at an unnamed big box retailer even though their sales staff was rude and unhelpful. The whole ordeal got me thinking that shopping online is just so much better. You have all of the information you could ever possibly need right at your fingertips.
